About the Centennial

A neighborhood worth celebrating.

From the orchards of the 1920s to the bustling boulevards of today, Sherman Oaks has always been a place where neighbors know each other, local businesses anchor the corner, and shade trees outlast every fad.

The Sherman Oaks 100 initiative brings together residents, schools, houses of worship, civic groups, and local businesses for a year of shared events — from heritage walks and concerts to youth programs, public art, and a community-wide birthday weekend.

A Century In Brief

From orchards to oak-lined streets.

A few milestones from a hundred years of Sherman Oaks history. See the full timeline for the deeper story.

  1. 1927

    A Neighborhood Is Named

Real-estate developer Moses Sherman lends his name to a new subdivision of fruit groves and home lots on the south side of the San Fernando Valley.

  2. 1934

    Ventura Boulevard Takes Shape

Roadside cafés, gas stations, and family-run shops begin to give the boulevard its still-recognizable Main Street character.

  3. 1960s

    Suburban Growth

Postwar families fill new neighborhoods. Schools, parks, libraries, and houses of worship anchor a fast-growing community identity.

  4. 2027

    Centennial Year

A year of public celebration, community storytelling, and gathering — honoring the past and writing the next chapter together.

"Sherman Oaks has always been the kind of place where the dry cleaner knows your name, the school principal waves on the corner, and the trees keep growing long after the people who planted them. A hundred years in, that's still the whole point." — Centennial Steering Committee
